The Symptoms

After the loss of your child, the symptoms of grief can manifest behaviorally, emotionally, and physically.  You may find yourself making comments or thinking thoughts far from your normal empathy way.  Here are just a few symptoms related to grief.

Behavioral Symptoms:

  • Assuming mannerisms and behaviors of the deceased

  • Disturbed sleep or nightmares

  • Excessive drinking of alcohol

  • Loss of appetite or comfort eating

  • Restlessness or hyperactivity

Emotional Symptoms:

  • Anxiety

  • Blaming

  • Bitterness

  • Confusion

  • Depression

  • Detachment from life

  • Inability to show or experience joy

  • Irritability

  • Loneliness

  • Numbness

  • Resentment

Physical Symptoms:

  • Breathlessness

  • Chest pain

  • Fatigue

  • Feeling sick

  • Headaches

  • Low resistance to illnesses

  • Oversensitivity to noise and light

  • Panic attacks

  • Shaking and increased heart rate

  • Sore muscles

  • Upset stomach
